The sub-compact SUV segment has become one of the most popular and highest selling segments in India quite rapidly. This segment has also become the battlegrounds for car manufacturers as every major car manufacturer is competing in this segment. Tata Nexon
Starting with the leader in terms of safety is the Tata Nexon. The Tata Nexon is one of the safest SUVs on the Indian roads with 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. Safety features on the Tata Nexon are standard across all the variants. The base variant of the Tata Nexon (XE) which costs Rs.6.99 lakh comes with safety features like ABS, Brake Assist, Power Door Locks, Child Safety locks, and dual airbags.
Additional safety features include seat belt warning, door ajar warning, rear seat belts, side-impact beams, Traction Control, Engine immobilizer and Crash sensor. You also get electronic stability control, and advanced safety features like rollover mitigation, Electronic brake pre-fill and brake disc wiping. Hill Assist and ISOFIX seats are also worthy of safety features. The build quality of the Tata Nexon is also well above the industry standards and comes with a strong door thud noise.

Maruti Vitara Brezza
While many mocked Maruti cars for their lightweight and unsafe cars, the Global NCAP tests of the Maruti Vitara Brezza proved otherwise. The sub-compact SUV from Maruti scored a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP tests which is quite decent. The build quality however can be still improved in the car. The Lxi variant which costs Rs.7.34 lakh comes with safety features like ABS with EBD, Central locking, Child Safety locks, dual airbags, anti-theft alarm but sadly misses out on brake assist.
Day and Night Rearview mirror, Side and front impact beams, automatic headlamps and advanced safety features like Suzuki Heartect body, Reverse parking sensor and ISOFIX seats. Compared to the Nexon the SUV misses out on traction control and electronic stability control in the base variant. The Toyota Urban Cruiser base variant also does not come with any additional safety features. It costs Rs.8.40 lakh.

Kia Sonet
Kia Sonet in its HTE variant gets

- Rear parking sensors
- Emergency stop signal
Dual ABS is very basic safety but the passenger gets better protection score because of this. Also ABS with Electronic brakeforce distribution helps in maintaining confidence during cornering. It also helps to eliminate understeer to some extent.
Reverse parking sensors on the lowest HTE variant will be of great help in parking. There is also an emergency stop signal which alerts the car behind during situations of extreme braking.

Hyundai Venue
Hyundai Venue is also one of the largest selling sub-compact SUVs in the Indian car market. The Global NCAP sadly has still not tested this car. The base variant E petrol at Rs.6.75 lakh comes with safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, safety locks, Day and Night IRVM, all warning sensors, front and side-impact beams and anti-theft device.
Like the Brezza it misses out on hill assist, traction control and electronic stability control. Though premium, the Hyundai Venue is not the safest of the lot. The Kia Sonet base variant at Rs.6.71 lakh also does not come with any additional safety features.
Ford Ecosport
The Ford Ecosport can be considered the creator of the sub-compact SUV segment. The Global NCAP has still not tested the Indian spec but the euro-spec version of the car managed to score 4-star rating in the Euro-NCAP. This could work for the Sub-Compact SUV Safety of the Ford Ecosport.
The Ford Ecosport Ambiente costs Rs.8.19 lakh and comes with safety features like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, all warnings, front and side-impact beams, adjustable seats and with advance safety features like Safe clutch start, Approach lights, follow me home headlamps, and anti-theft device. IT also does not come with hill assist, traction control, and electronic stability control. The overall build quality of the Ford Ecosport is also quite decent.
Mahindra XUV300
The second car in our list to get a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP is the Mahindra XUV300. The base variant of the SUV costs Rs.7.94 lakh and comes with safety features like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, all warnings and locks, Side and front impact beams, Engine immobilizer, crash sensor, speed sensing locks, and ISOFIX seats.
Other advanced safety features include Corner braking control, High mounted stop lamp, Panic braking signal and micro-hybrid technology. Being a made in India SUV, the build quality of the Mahindra XUV300 is also pretty decent with strong door thud noise. Sub-Compact SUV Safety of the XUV 300 is proven with 5-star rating from GNCAP.
Nissan Magnite
Nissan Magnite takes care of safety from the base variant. It is offered with dual airbags on the base variant. Also, safety is enhanced further with seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters. The rear passengers also get 3 seatbelts with 2 passengers getting retract lock.
The sub-compact SUV gets ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and also the car gets anti-rollbar to cut down on the body roll and improve chassis stiffness. Even on the lower variant it will get rear parking sensors. The best touch is that the rear window gets defoggers even in the lowest XE variant.
In conclusion Sub-Compact, SUV Safety can be summed up as of now the XUV 300 and the Tata Nexon to get the best-proven safety. Rest other cars do offer a lot of safety features but not in the lower variants. Lastly, with the Nissan Magnite you can expect some amount of safety even in the lower variant but the car is fairly new in the market and there is no proven safety till we have a GNCAP report.
