- The FMX was in no way a fresh design when Ford began installing it behind 351W and 351C engines. Prior to 1966, Ford used the MX Ford-O-Matic three-speed transmission in most heavy-duty applications.
- 1- Prefix, suffix, service #, and serial # located on ID tag attached to right side of case. Also called Merc-O-Matic Three speed, or Mercury Multi-Drive, Cruiseomatic, Tubro-Drive, CW & FMX. 2- Column shift. 3 - Floor shift. 4- 2 Barrel Carb. 5- Id tag attached to servo cover. 6- 4 Barrel Carb.
FMX Was used 1968-81 in many Ford products. This is an hydraulically controlled rear wheel drive transmission. It has a cast iron case and an aluminum bell housing and extension housing. It is similar in appearance to the Fordomatic that was used since 1951 and the Borg-Warner BW8 and BW12, but almost none of the parts are interchangeable. 1968 was a cross-over year where the Fordomatic was used in some vehicles for part of the year before changing over to the FMX.
